General Assembly

  • Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly occupies a central position as the chief deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations.

International Court of Justice

  • Established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and beginning work in April 1946, the Court’s role is to settle legal disputes submitted to it by States in accordance with international law and to give advisory options on legal questions.

Security Council

  • Under the Charter, the SC has primary responsibility for maintenance of international peace and security. They take the lead in determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. In some cases, they can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize use of force to maintain peace.

Secretariat

  • The Secretariat is an international staff working in duty stations around the world. Duties carried out by them range from administering peace keeping organizations to mediating international disputes, from surveying economic and social trends and problems to preparing studies in human rights and sustainable development.

Department of Public Information

  • The Department of Public Information (DPI) was established in 1946 to promote global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations. DPI undertakes this goal through radio, television, print, the Internet, video-conferencing and other media tools.
